The late Lee Kuan Yew was a big fan of the Philippines, recognizing it as one of the most developed nations in the 1950s and 60s. In his memoirs, he famously stated, “there was no reason why the Philippines should not have been one of the more successful ASEAN countries.” However, after decades of observation, he became critical of various aspects of the Philippines.
