Most Americans are unaware that the United States military currently controls a third of Syria, so it will no doubt come as a further surprise to learn that the U.S. has retaliated to attacks on those bases with missile strikes on targets within Syria. These strikes were, of course, defended by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin as an act of “self-defense.”
