Following the military coup, French President Emmanuel Macron issued a harsh warning against attacks on French interests in Niger. The warning came after rallies outside France’s embassy in Niamey, where demonstrators voiced dissatisfaction with France’s policies and support for the military junta. Thousands of pro-junta protestors gathered in response to Paris halting help over the coup, burning French flags and voicing sympathy for the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary company. Niger has also banned gold and uranium exports to France, heightening tensions between the two countries. ECOWAS has set Niger a one-week deadline to reinstate the expelled president or face taking actions to restore constitutional order.
