Transgender weightlifter Laurel Hubbard crashes out of Tokyo Olympics after three failed attempts on first Games appearance

Laurel Hubbard, the controversial New Zealand weightlifter who is the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics, has bowed out of the women’s competition at the first time of asking after failing with three lifts.

Super-heavyweight Hubbard’s much-debated debut at the Olympics ended in an immediate exit on Monday, with the 43-year-old, who transitioned to become a woman in 2012, failing with snatch attempts at 120kg and 125kg.
