Over 34,000 people succumbed to Covid-19 in the Americas last week – almost 40% of the global death toll, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has said, adding that demand for hospital beds in some places is “dire.”

More than 1.2 million new Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the region over the past seven days alone, the agency said, with hospitals in South American nations particularly feeling the strain.
