Citing a need to protect its national interest and the Afghan peace process, Pakistan’s top diplomat has nixed any possibility of reopening air bases for future US anti-Taliban operations after the troop pullout ends in September.
Pakistani bases, airspace and all-season supply routes and communication lines into neighboring Afghanistan had been crucial in enabling and sustaining the US-led military invasion following the 9/11 attacks two decades ago.
