Iran to Perform ‘Cold Test’ of Arak Heavy Water Plant to Prepare for 2022 Reactor Start

Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran was allowed to operate several small nuclear facilities and produce small amounts of refined uranium, but was required to shut down and reconfigure its Arak facility to render it unable to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons.

Scientists are preparing for a “cold test” of the IR-40 heavy water reactor at Arak, the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) said on Friday. The facility was formerly capable of producing enough weapons-grade plutonium for roughly two nuclear weapons per year, but Tehran agreed to redesign it as part of the 2015 nuclear deal.
