Chancellor Angela Merkel and Germany’s 16 state leaders have agreed to extend the country’s current lockdown until the middle of February in response to the spread of Covid-19 and the appearance of new variants.
Confirming the extension on Tuesday evening, Merkel said the country’s efforts to control Covid-19 were being threatened by a spreading new mutation in the virus, and she called for a common European approach in tackling the strain.
