While dozens of vaccines against Covid-19 are under development across the world, according to the speaker of Russia’s parliament, Western nations are increasingly putting up barriers against effective formulas from overseas.
Vyacheslav Volodin, the Chairman of the country’s State Duma, told the Rossiya-24 news channel on Thursday that access to life-saving jabs was becoming increasingly complicated by political motives. “We have watched what is happening in the European Union, where the US is imposing its products,” he said, “but at the same time forcing countries to pay, thereby trying to maintain this monopoly in order to make money on it.” This dynamic, Volodin argued, has dictated the continent’s approach to the Sputnik V formula, developed by Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute.
