Wanted for embezzlement and abuse of power in his home country, the former Georgian leader moved to the US in 2014, before being poached by Kiev’s post-coup authorities to head the Ukrainian region of Odessa in 2015. Two years later, he was stripped of his Ukrainian citizenship and eventually deported, but returned to the country in 2019.
