On this episode of Going Underground, we speak to one of the world’s foremost film directors: Oliver Stone. He discusses his new book ‘Chasing the Light,’ which tells the story not only of his life, career, and work on iconic films such as ‘Scarface’, and ‘Midnight Express’, but also the interference of the state in his work, especially ‘Salvador’. He discusses the US’ continuing imperialism in Latin America; how Hollywood’s obsession with cop shows ultimately led to the Crime Bill; the War on Drugs and his own drug use; the revival of the Cold War in the 1980s against the Soviet Union and the birth of Ronald Reagan’s neoliberalism; the Clinton White House; and the intelligence agencies’ continuing grip on the US government. Finally, as you’d expect, he doesn’t hold back on his opinions on the current POTUS and why it was hopeless for Trump to change a system run by the military-industrial complex.
