With hundreds of people protesting in Niger’s streets in favour of the military, the transitional governments of Mali and Burkina Faso release a joint statement. They claim that any intervention by France or the United States, whether military or diplomatic, would be “tantamount to a declaration of war” against their country. Niger has also banned gold and uranium exports to France, heightening tensions between the two countries. ECOWAS has set Niger a one-week deadline to reinstate the expelled president or face taking actions to restore constitutional order.
