US government to place fresh sanctions on exports to Russia in response to alleged poisoning of opposition figure Alexey Navalny

The US Department of Commerce has announced that it will expand restrictions on exports to Russia, two weeks after Washington revealed its belief that Moscow is responsible for allegedly poisoning opposition figure Alexey Navalny.

In a statement posted on the department’s website, Russia was accused of “deploying illegal nerve agents against dissidents, both inside and outside its borders” in a “flagrant” violation of its commitments under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
